Try Linux
Linux is a totally free operating system. It is extremely stable - Linux uptimes are measured in months, regular reboots are not required. It will run on a huge range of hardware, including PCs that aren't powerful enough to run the latest versions of commercial operating systems.
Linux can be downloaded free under the GNU General Public License. Various distributions are available - choose the one that suits you best. Don't get too hung up on your choice, as you can always download another free of charge later!
